A condition that affects the movement, body posture, and balance is termed to be cerebral palsy. This condition is also known as brain paralysis. Damage that occurs on the immature brain before birth would affect the muscle tone and motor movements.

Cerebral Palsy
The signs and symptoms would begin to appear early in life, like during infancy or early childhood. The effect of cerebral palsy on functions would vary. Normally, infants are slow in developing growth-oriented skills such as rolling over, crawling, sitting, and walking.

Early signs of cerebral palsy
The symptoms would vary from mild to severe if left untreated on time. The early signs of cerebral palsy would include:

  • Poor muscle tone
  • Stiff muscles
  • Difficult to control movements
  • Issues with balancing
  • Issues with bodily postures
  • Difficulty with coordination
  • Problems with walking
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
  • Breathing problems
  • Seizures
  • Learning disabilities

  • Difficulty with bowel and bladder control

Ayurvedic treatment for cerebral palsy

Proper long-term care with the appropriate medical care team is a must to treat cerebral palsy. An ayurvedic touch can help resolve the signs or symptoms and reverse the brain damage. Medhya, a group of herbal medicines can be used to regenerate the damaged brain cells. This would bring back the functioning capacity of the brain. Brahmi, Mandukparni, Shankhpushpi, Jyotishmati, Kushmand, Ustukhudoos, Yashtimadhuk, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Guduchi, Vacha, Haritaki, Abhrak-Bhasma, and Suvarna-Bhasma are considered to be the herbal medicines that can be used. It is believed that some of these medicines can be used to reduce convulsions.

Certain medicines would help improve the condition of the majja dhatu or the tissue. The medicines that help with the tissue would include Guduchi, Amalaki, Musta, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Pancha-Gavya-Ghruta, and Brahmi-Ghruta. There are a few more medicines that could be used to help improve majja dhatu, such as Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Vatagajankush-Ras, Tapyadi-Loh-Ras, Mahavat-Vidhwana-Ras, and Vish-Tinduk-Vati. 

The herbal oils such as Mahanarayan oil, Sahasaindhav oil, and Mahamash oil can be used to massage the entire body. This would help improve the movements, bodily postures, and balance. Shirodhara and Shirobasti are certain specialized panchakarma procedures that are considered to be useful and make the condition better.  

Ayurvedic treatment can help reduce the symptoms of cerebral palsy. The massage and herbal medicines would help reduce disability and improve the functioning of the affected person.
